Wheelchair accessible (sleeping 6) Yr Hen Stablau (the old stables in Welsh) is a recently renovated 1840s stables set in luxuriant gardens on a wooded hillside over looking the Dyfi Valley near Machynlleth, mid –Wales.

(This is where I feel I have to add my “two penny” worth as it is probably my favourite part of Wales, although I was born in West Wales! Sian, D.H.D.)

The conversion has been designed to preserve existing walls and features, using the original stone, slates and timbers, yet making the building energy efficient.e.g. heating by LPG gas and solar energy-environmentally cleaner than oil or electricity, draught lobby to reduce heat loss, porch with glazing to prevent draughts, double glazing of all windows, thick insulation and draught sealing of roof and walls, low solvent organic paint on walls, underfloor heating with 92 percent efficiency boiler, passive ventilation (reducing energy use) and a woodburning stove using on site logs.

The cosy sitting room, with French windows leading on to a slate terrace and woodland view, houses a woodburning stove, comfortable seating and digital T.V.

The kitchen/diner with its high ceiling, original beams and farmland views has been specifically designed. All door handles are disability friendly, the colour scheme is planned for good visibility of doors, windows, handles, floors, worktops and cupboards. The kitchen facilities have a cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer and washing machine/dryer. N.B. it even has its own natural spring water (UV filtered).

The first floor comprises two twin bedrooms with again the original beams, landing and W.C. (duvets and bed linen provided)

Mid season is highly recommended for flowers and good weather!

Room Specifications

The new design provides very high quality attractive accommodation. The ground floor of the cottage is fully wheelchair accessible, including a bedroom, wheel-in shower room and toilet.

Room Amenities

Electric, gas, central heating and one load of logs are included in the rental price. Pets are welcome, but please bring their own beds and blankets –more importantly, please keep them away from the sheep in neighbouring farms. Smoking outside only.

Area Information

Visitors have access to a footpath through the garden which includes many rarities of shrubs and are at their most colourful in spring and early summer-a stunning display of rhododendrons and azaleas. This secluded and picturesque setting makes Yr Hen Stablau an ideal retreat if you wish to relax, paint, read or write. If you wish to be more active in this famous beautiful corner of Snowdonia, there are many attractions on offer.
