Not sure on something or have a question? Just ask us! We’ll ensure you are 100% happy with every detail of your holiday, from the time of booking until you return home!

Below are some of our frequently asked questions from people travelling with a hearing impairment.

Advice from someone travelling with hearing loss

"Just do it! Don't let having a BAHA or any level of deafness put you off travelling. You'll be on the same footing as many of your fellow travellers – they won't understand the language either! So get out there and enjoy it!"

FAQs

I will need adaptations to my accommodation. Is this something you can arrange?

Yes. Many of the holiday properties we advertise are suitable for people with hearing loss or hearing impairments.

A number of cottages and hotels both in the UK and overseas specifically cater for people with hearing impairments. Booking with DisabledHolidays.com means we can recommend holiday property owners experienced in accommodating people with hearing loss, including staff who provide wake-ups in emergencies, hotels with hearing loops and much more.

Can you make hotel staff aware that I am deaf?

Yes. We can make hotel reception staff aware that you are deaf or hearing impaired before you arrive.

Can you arrange assistance at the airport?

Yes. Airport assistance can be pre-booked and arranged free of charge through us. We can also arrange for someone to help you at the check-in desk and onto the aircraft – this will help you feel assured that you are not missing any announcements that are not communicated visually. On the plane you may find it beneficial to sit in an aisle seat so the flight attendants can inform you of any announcements made during the flight.

Would cruising be a suitable holiday?

Yes. Cruise ships have various important amenities for people with hearing impairments, including:

  • A portable room kit in your stateroom, available on request. It includes a visual-tactile alert system that provides alerts for door knocking, telephone ringing, alarm clocks and smoke detectors.
  • A TTY (teletypewriter) in your stateroom, available on request. The TTY in your stateroom interfaces with the TTY at the Guest Relations Desk to meet all your in-stateroom needs.
  • Amplified telephones available in staterooms and public areas.
  • Closed-captioned televisions available in all staterooms.
  • Sign language interpreting services on selected voyages.
  • Excursions with interpreters.

Can you help me plan accessible days out?

Yes. We can plan the accessibility of your chosen holiday destination before you book with us. If there is something in particular you would like to do on holiday, we can book this for you prior to your departure, or if you are not sure where you would like to visit, let us know and we can suggest some fantastic accessible days out.

How do I take care of a hearing aid while on holiday?

If you use a hearing aid and are travelling to a particularly humid destination, it may be worth contacting your audiologist and asking for a drying pot. This will absorb any moisture that builds up in the hearing aid and will prevent it from malfunctioning.

What about travel insurance?

To help ensure peace of mind while on holiday, we advise getting travel insurance. We recommend our partner Fish Insurance, one of the UK’s biggest disability insurance providers.
