Holidays for Stroke Victims
Holidays are an important part of life. But if you’ve had a stroke, you may be worried about travelling long distances and finding accommodating that is suitable, and the idea of going on holiday can become stressful.
Strokes affect people in different ways. Some may have few physical side effects; others may have some which recover in weeks, whilst others will have long-lasting mobility difficulties.
The fact is limited mobility does not mean you can’t go on holiday.
And this is where the Disabled Holiday Directory comes in. We are a travel agency who plan and book holidays specifically for people with disabilities, both physical and mental, and for those with limited mobility. Our job is to search for suitable destinations, travel and accommodation that are as accessible as you need.
What We Do
We are specialists in finding accessible holidays for people with disabilities and limited mobility following a stroke. Using our expertise we can arrange:
- accommodation in accessible locations/resorts (no steep inclines or hills)
- adapted transfers and assistance at airports
- fully accessible accommodation, guaranteed
- accessible rooms suitable for the level of your mobility, eg. rooms with turning areas for wheelchair users, walk in shower rooms, etc
- hired equipment such as shower stools, hoists, grab rails, mobility equipment, etc
- rooms near lifts
- rooms with fridges for medication
General Advice
If you’ve recently had a stroke, you may have recovered to a point that you feel well enough to go on holiday. Standard advice is to always check with your GP to ensure you are medically fit to travel.
The length of journey or the increased activity of a holiday may leave stroke victims feeling tired. Moving round busy airports, carrying luggage, and early flights could all take their toll. We often find people benefit from hiring wheelchairs on holiday, even if they don’t normally use them. When you book your holiday with us we can advise you on whether we think you would benefit from hiring mobility equipment, and arrange it for you. We can also arrange personal assistance for you at airports and ferry ports. Assistance comes at no extra cost, and is a feature welcomed by many of our customers.
If you are on a long flight, it is advisable to drink a lot of water. Similarly, if possible you should move around (even if it’s just wiggling your toes). This will help prevent blood clots, which is particularly important for those who have suffered a stroke.
We also recommend checking your travel insurance is up to date. It is important to make sure you are fully covered, should anything happen while you are on holiday.
Remember to take any medication with you, and take enough to make sure you won’t run out! Your GP will also tell you if you need to take additional medication while on holiday.
