Zeeland is a popular holiday destination in Holland, both with foreign tourists as well as with the locals. Zeeland is made up of a number of small islands, with many bridges and tunnels connecting the various places such as Overflakkee, Duiveland, Walcheren and Beveland.
Popular towns include Zierikzee, Vlissingen and Middelburg and especially in summer, Zeeland is full of tourist activities with a chance to experience Dutch culture at many summer festivals. Finally Zeeland hosts some of best examples of the impressive water engineering of The Netherlands. These are part of the Deltaplan protection scheme which was commisioned by the Dutch government after serious flooding hit the lower parts of Holland in 1953. The huge project was eventually completed with the build of the impressive storm surge barrier 'De Maaslandkering' in 1997.
